=============================================================================== SPECIAL BLEND — LIVE AT INDEPENDENCE VILLAGE (OCTOBER 26, 2026) HOW WE BUILT OUR CUSTOM MIXING CONSOLE & MASTERED THIS LIVE ALBUM Published & Engineered by Thunderbear Studios (https://thunderbearstudios.org) Band Website: https://specialblendlive.com =============================================================================== 1. WHY RECORDING A 7-PIECE LIVE BAND IS NORMALLY SO DIFFICULT ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When you listen to a studio album, each musician is usually recorded in a separate soundproof booth or one instrument at a time. If a singer makes a adjustment to their volume or tone, it only affects their voice. A live Special Blend concert is the exact opposite—and that is what makes it so fun in person, yet so challenging to capture on a recording: * Seven performers (Brian, Rob, Mayo, David, Dan, Paul, and Mike) are on stage together in a real, lively room with a live audience. * Seven vocal microphones are open at the exact same time, just a few feet apart from acoustic guitars, a mandolin, blues harmonica, stage keyboards, electric bass, tambourine, and drums. * Different band members step up to sing lead on different songs—and on songs like "Wagon Wheel," "Bad Moon Rising," and "End of the Line," the lead vocal passes from one singer to another from verse to verse, while three to five voices join together on the choruses ("Sweet Caroline," "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Monster Mash"). In a standard live board recording, seven open vocal mics act like seven room microphones. The echo of the room and the bleed from nearby instruments wash out the lyrics, cause hollow "comb-filtering" (when the same voice reaches two microphones a few milliseconds apart), and make the lead singer get buried whenever the whole band sings the chorus. 2. WHAT WE BUILT: THE "STUDIO-12" ADAPTIVE MASTERING CONSOLE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To make our live concerts sound like a warm, intimate, front-row studio record without losing the genuine energy of the room and the crowd, we built our own custom 13-channel mixing console and 64-bit audio processing engine at Thunderbear Studios (https://thunderbearstudios.org), tailored specifically to our Tascam multitrack stage recorder. Instead of treating all 21 songs with a single "one-size-fits-all" setting, our custom Studio-12 workstation splits the raw 12-track stage recording into 13 dedicated studio channels: - Channels 1–7: Individual Vocal Strips (Brian, Rob, Mayo, David, Dan, Paul, and Mike) - Channel 8: Paul's Blues Harmonica (automatically separated from his vocal microphone whenever he plays a harmonica solo or fill) - Channel 9: Mike's Electric Bass (with classic tube-style warmth so you can hear every bass note even on small phone or laptop speakers) - Channel 10 & 11: Acoustic Guitars (Left Body) & Mandolin (Right Chime) - Channel 12: David's Yamaha Stage Keyboards (isolated cleanly from his vocal channel) - Channel 13: Restored 3-Band Stage Drums (Kick, Snare & Natural Room) In our browser-based Studio-12 Mixing Console, we can solo any singer or instrument, shape their 4-band equalizer and compression, set their stereo stage position, and save custom per-song mix presets for all 21 tracks. 3. WHAT OUR AUDIO ENGINE DOES BEHIND THE SCENES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Every song on this album passes through a 7-stage, 64-bit digital signal processing (DSP) pipeline before becoming the final master: * Time & Phase Alignment: Because sound travels through the air at about one foot per millisecond, instruments and microphones at different distances on stage arrive slightly out of sync. The engine measures and aligns the acoustic guitars, mandolin, and vocal pairs to sub-millisecond precision against the bass so the low end stays tight and punchy. * Intelligent Multi-Mic De-Bleed & Natural Phrase Continuity: When a singer isn't singing, their microphone is gently tucked down so it doesn't pick up hollow room echo from across the stage. When they step up to sing—even with an acoustic guitar strumming right in front of them—our Phrase-Continuous Bridge holds their microphone smoothly open across every word and breath so their voice never cuts out or sounds choppy. * Automatic Per-Song Lead & Harmony Choir Balancing: Our Song Architecture Analyzer listens to the entire song to understand who is singing lead, who is trading verses, who is holding down the low bass vocal pocket (like the "Wimoweh" bass line on "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" or "Haunted House"), and when the whole band joins in on the chorus. During big 3-to-5-part choruses, it automatically balances the harmony choir just behind the lead singer so the melody always shines through clearly. * Instrument Separation (Harmonica, Stage Keys & Drums): Paul sings and plays blues harmonica into the same microphone, and David's vocal channel also carries his keyboard. Our engine separates Paul's harmonica into its own dedicated channel and ducks David's keyboard slightly whenever he sings a lyric line—bringing his vocals forward by +6.5 dB while keeping the keyboard full during instrumental fills. * Preserving Live Crowd Applause & Stage Moments: A live concert isn't complete without the audience. At the beginning and end of every song, the engine automatically opens a warm stereo "Applause Bloom" across the front-line stage microphones so you hear the room clapping, cheering, and singing along naturally. * Album-Wide Loudness Leveling (-13.60 LUFS): Finally, all 21 tracks are mastered to the exact same broadcast loudness standard (-13.60 LUFS with zero digital clipping) and checked across four speaker profiles (studio monitors, car stereos, living room TVs, and mobile phones). You can play the album from Track 01 ("Monster Mash") all the way through Track 21 ("Sweet Caroline") without ever needing to reach for the volume knob. =============================================================================== Recorded Live at Independence Village — New Hudson, Michigan (October 26, 2026) Special Blend: Brian • Rob • Mayo • David • Dan • Paul • Mike Custom Console & 64-Bit Mastering Engine by Thunderbear Studios https://specialblendlive.com | https://thunderbearstudios.org ===============================================================================
